ADVENTURE AT PAPALLACTA

Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve:

Cayambe Coca is managed by the Ministry of the Environment.  The Reserve extends for approximately  400,000 hectares (1 million acres) and is largely composed of páramo (moorland), primary forests, rivers and lagoons.  Cayambe Coca is considered one of the protected areas housing the greatest animal and plant diversity in Ecuador . From Papallacta the Reserve can be accessed upon payment of a small entrance fee.  The páramo, considered a carbon deposit, collects and regulates water flow and rainfall.  Trout fishing is allowed with the appropriate permit issued by the authorities.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Wear warm, waterproof clothing to protect yourself against the cold and rain.  We also recommend using a high-factor sun cream (especially whilst using the outdoor pools), sunglasses and insect repellent, particularly if you intend to go trekking.

WALKING PROGRAMS

There is a range of objectives that you will be supporting joining our new walking program: including signage for public areas, creating family guesthouses, converting community ruins into a museum, and improving basic infrastructure. In addition, the initiative developed a tourism impact monitoring system to ensure visitation does not damage the environment and the reserve’s future tourism potential.
